Pretty much, I want to focus this first major blog post on how women are represented in society and popular culture through art. In class on Wednesday, I brought in a photo of Andy Warhol's Marilyn Diptych, a pop art piece from the 1960's. This piece is a more modern one, and shows one perspective toward women during the time period. There are numerous other perspectives from throughout history and art pieces that exemplify them, and I want to integrate a discussion of these pieces into my blog. This is possibly an intro paragraph? :
The distinction between males and females has been a motif throughout history that has inched its way into every facet of life. In nearly every culture, during nearly each time period, women are in some way or another portrayed as fragile, confined, and subordinate. Monumental events that have raised the status of women, such as the women’s suffrage movement, acceptance of females into a variety of universities, and women’s growing tendency to enter male-dominant career fields have indeed occurred during recent history, and express that society’s view toward females is rapidly changing. However, this transformation is not necessarily a positive one. Nowadays, women are coming out of the political confines that they have been exposed to for years, but socially they continue to live life as “eye candy” under the “male gaze,” as they have for hundreds of years. Art throughout history tells the story of this transformation.
This seems like some good background, but you need to deal with more specifics of the piece itself. Also, you'll need to contextualize the time period Warhol made the piece as compared to now- why is this image important for popular culture today?
ReplyDeleteI haven't really to elaborated on the specifics of my blog yet, but what are some other ties, from history or pop culture, that I could make to the piece to create a more well-rounded discussion? I recently did some research and discovered that a die-hard feminist named Valerie Solanas actually attempted to murder Andy Warhol, which expresses a lot more about his ideas when he made the piece. This piece itself is meant to express the vulnerabilities of Marilyn Monroe herself. She an actress so heavily portrayed in pop culture during the 1950's and 1960's. Her life was short, heavily due to society's perspective and expectations of her, as a female.
ReplyDeleteHere is a link to an image of the Marilyn Diptych:

i think the main idea of this post id how women are represented in art work. i believe so far you have used reasonable examples on this blog although visual aids are needed. With a few visual aids the blog will be more convincing to readers
ReplyDelete1. I think you should show or describe the process of how women have been represented in art throughout history. There have been many art movements throughout history and it could be very interesting to see how each one relates to women and how each movements represented women.
ReplyDelete2. What is the specific popular culture item the author is writing about?
The author writes about well-known art piece created by Andy Warhol. It is called Marilyn Diptych.
3. What is the main idea of the post?
The view of the female gender has changed over the years. Women have always been related to fragility and incapability. In the last decades this has changed, and we see a broader presence of women in culture and society. However, stereotypes still exist and views towards women are still narrower than the ones of men.
4. Does the author offer support for her/his main idea? How could they be more convincing?
The author provides interesting opinions, however I think she should show more historic examples to make her point and support her claim.
5. Has the author included visual elements? If so, are they effective? If not, where should they be placed?
The author included an interesting art piece. This art piece supports her text. However, it would be very interesting to see more examples of representations of women in art throughout history.
The main idea of this topic could be how women are visually represented in popular culture. Specifically, the author could include information as to why it is appealing or ideal to have women presented this way in pop culture. Good use of visuals!
